• One of my favorite places to grab a quick lunch when I am downtown is the Don Juan chip truck.

Don Juan, along with many other chip trucks and hot dog vender’s are going to be displaced from their usual permitted locations that are within the traffic traffic restricted yellow zone and from in front of the Metro Convention Centre that is in the red zone.

So what if one of the G20 delegates have heard of the famous Don Juan chip truck and decides to go out onto front street, only to find the Don Juan has been displaced from his regular spot. A spot that he has had for over 25 years. Where will that delegate  from England or even Barack Obama have to go to find the Don Juan chip truck?

With the leaders of the world 20 top economies heading to Toronto for the June 26th and 27th summit, Toronto Police have unveiled their security zone plan.

Even before the G20 summit, things will get harder for chip trucks like Don Juan. Don’s regular spot is right in front of the Convention Centre that is the red zone.  In the days leading up to the summit, police will be shutting down the red zone for security purposes.

Traffic will not be great around the yellow zone before the summit either. Starting June 7, the Integrated Security Unit (ISU) will begin erecting an eight- to 10-foot chain link fence similar to the fencing used for the Toronto Indy race.  The fence will surround the designated “yellow zone,” bounded by Bay and York streets to the east, Wellington Street West to the north, Windsor Street, Blue Jays Way and Rees Street to the west and Lake Shore and Bremner boulevards to the south. Photo identification will be mandatory for anyone entering this zone from late Friday, June 25 until Sunday, June 27.

While weekday commuters will not be effected by the security checkpoints, anyone who works or lives inside the zone, will have to expect delays.

Luckily I have my Downtown Toronto office space at Telsec, because 1 Yonge Street is located just outside the yellow zone. I will not have to get a special security pass to access the yellow zone. Yes, the summit is on the weekend and would not disrupt most clients, but one of the reasons I chose to have my office space Toronto at Telsec is because it is accessible to me seven days a week.  The only problem I will have that weekend is not being able to walk up to the Metro Convention Centre and enjoy fries from my favorite chip truck – Don Juan’s.

  • This past weekend was the first long weekend of the summer. This is traditionally the weekend when most people make their first trip to the cottage and open it up for the season. This is also the time when many people try to figure out how to take advantage of having a cottage and spend as much time there. For many people the solution is leaving early on Thursday and coming back to the city on Monday. That is not always that easy, because they do not want to miss important calls from customers or potential new clients. We have all had those clients who tend to call near the end of the day on a Friday or the new potential customer who calls early Monday morning. In many cases these are not calls that should go unanswered, as they are very important to our businesses.

I do not have a cottage or a summer vacation spot, but I often like to make any summer weekend a long weekend and take to the back roads of Ontario and discover places that I have not been to before and routes that I have not traveled. There is nothing like finding a hidden gem of a spot to take photos or to enjoy fresh food at a farmers market or a roadside restaurant. It used to be that every time I took off from the office and onto the open road, I was always afraid that I would miss an important business call.

Taking a vacation or a long weekend became so much easier to do since moving my Toronto office space to Telsec Business Centres. At Telsec my business calls are handled by a professional receptionist, who not only answers my calls to my instructions, but also routes my calls at my specific instructions. If I know I will be out of the office during regular office hours, I can instruct the receptionist to route my calls to my cell phone or to wherever I will be. I could be on the road and for all my client knows, I am sitting in my office space Toronto at 1 Yonge Street. I can simply inform the receptionist that I will not be in the office and she forwards my calls to my cell phone. But I could also leave instructions with the receptionist to tell callers that I am out of the office and that I will be checking my voice mail.

With modern laptop computer equipment and advanced Internet connections like Wifi and cellular internet connections, you do not need to be in the office to access files on your office computer. You could be sitting on the dock of your cottage, remotely accessing your clients files on your office computer. Just be sure to cover the microphone on your phone when that pesky jet ski goes past, as it may be hard to explain those noises to a client that thinks you are in your downtown Toronto office space.

  • I was at an event over the weekend and someone asked me where my office was located, so I told them at 1 Yonge Street in the Toronto Star building.  They replied “Wow you have an office there! Isn’t that expensive?”  All I could say was “NO not really” I explained to them that my Toronto office space was a business centre that offered a wide range of office space options, including virtual office space in Toronto.

This got them asking more questions. I told them that I originally signed up for a Toronto mail service with Telsec, so that I could get my business mail at a prestigious address rather than a post office box which sounds unprofessional. As I found myself needing a physical office, I then rented a shared office space that gave me access to boardrooms and modern office equipment like photocopiers, fax machine, and even a colour photo copier/printer.

Finally after talking to them for 20 or thirty minutes, I realized that I should have just given them the website for my Toronto office space at Telsec www.Telsec.net. I did tell them to visit the site and also told them to read the article at www.telsec.net/articles/article-01.html. I should carry around some Telsec business cards. It is amazing how many people I meet that would have never thought that business centres were an alternative to a small office space in Toronto.

Have you looked into your Toronto office space?
