Last Sunday I went down to my downtown office space to take some preliminary test shots of the boardroom and the seminar training room. On my way in I stopped at McDonalds on Front Street  for an Egg McMuffin. This McDonalds does not have a drive through or a parking lot, so I pulled down the side street and ran in. As I was coming out there was a parking enforcement officer writing me a ticket. When I read the ticket it said parking in a no stopping zone – $60. This was crazy, where was the sign. It seems the sign was hidden under an overhanging tree branch.  I knew I had to fight this one.

I was not able to get to the parking enforcement court last week, but I finally got there today. I got into a line that said something like report here first (basically where you get the right forms to request trial), only to finally get to the counter and be told that I was in the wrong line. I had to go down the hall and to the left for that office.

I was finally in the right line with the right paperwork, only to be stuck behind a very irate gentleman who could not understand why he got two tickets within hours of each other for parking in front of his home. When he got up to the counter he really gave the woman behind the glass a piece of his mind because she told him she could not reverse the tickets and he would have to go back out of line to fill out the forms to request a trial date. I knew I did not want to be served by her, as this man got her really angry with his shouting and accusations, so I let the lady behind me go first and I would wait for the other wicket.

When I finally got to the wicket and presented my ticket, my trial request form and photo evidence to show that sign was not visible and hoping that I might be able to get off without going to trial.  The clerk entered my info and apologized that she was not able to reverse it. I was prepared to go to court and fight it, but if I could get it reversed that would have been a bonus.  Then after she stamped and handed me my receipt that said I had requested a trial date and said ” you will get a letter in about 8 months with your trial date”. What?  8 months just to get a date for the trial.

When I got back here to my Toronto office space, I went into the kitchen to get an always complimentary coffee, I told another person standing there what had just happened at the courthouse. They told me that city hall lost their trial request paperwork and never sent them a trial date, then an unpaid parking ticket showed up on the bill when they went to renew their vehicle sticker.

With a municipal election coming up in November, I think this should be an election issue. The candidate who says they will ensure a parking ticket trial within 3 months or the ticket is reversed, will get my vote.

I wish finding a new home was as easy as it was for me to find my downtown Toronto office space. I decided that I no longer want to live in the suburbs and want to find a place closer to downtown. I look daily on craigslist and most often what people are posting is not what they actually have, they try to make it sound better than it is.  When I see the craigslist ads for my office space downtown Toronto, they do not try to over sell what they are offering, they say it as it is.

Why is it that people try to over hype an apartment when they know it will not be as advertised when I come to see it?

When I was searching for a Toronto office space, I found a few places on the Internet, but when I arrived, they were nothing like the advertisement. When  I finally saw what Telsec had to offer, I realized that they said on the web site was under hyped and that I would get more bang for my buck than I thought. The staff was super friendly and the other tenants  were even more friendly, that sold me on this office space.

Back to my living space dilemma, I am searching for an apartment for September 1st, but all the ads I see are for August 1st.  I wish I could find a home as easy as I found my office space and my photo studio. It really bogels me why someone lists a 350 square foot apartment without mentioning square footage  as a spacious place, it was a broom closet of a bedroom and  a bathroom suited for someone under 5 feet tall.  My favorite laugh came when a place said they had 24/7 security, but when I went to view the place at 7 P.M., the security guard was fast asleep.

There has been some light at the end of the tunnel, one of my fellow office space tenants heard my plea for a new home rental and has told me about a place that is owned by a friend. This is what makes my office space Toronto so great, not only do fellow tenants do business with each other, they also network in other ways.

It is amazing how one forgets some of the amazing attractions there are in and around downtown Toronto. Places we may or may not have ever visited, or even knew were there. Sometimes we take these places for granted and never actually go to them, until we get a visitor from out of town.

This week, I have been hanging out with a friend who has a visitor from Australia. Last Saturday we decided to take this guy Dan to the Toronto Islands. We parked the car at my downtown Toronto office space and walked 2 minutes to the ferry docks.

Upon our return from the islands, I realized that there were plenty of other attractions that were within walking distance or quick transit ride from my office space  in Toronto.  Toronto attractions such as the Air Canada Centre, Rogers Centre, Metro Convention Centre,  CN Tower, Harbourfront, Hockey Hall of Fame, Harbourfront and Ontario Place.

So when visiting these places, I figured I would use my monthly parking pass at 1 Yonge Street parking lot and make our way to these attractions. Today we are going to the CN Tower. We will park the car and walk to the tower, while taking in the vibe of Harbourfront.

World Cup Finals was the buzz in the office today, not vuvuzelas. All the talk around the coffee machine at my Toronto office space today seemed to be about the World Cup final and the Spanish win. While some office space tenants were talking about this octopus that had predicted the winners of  all the important games, others want that octopus to help them pick their Lotto Maxx numbers.

As I was getting on the elevator to go for lunch, I overheard someone say that they were going to miss the sound of all those vuvuzelas.  The thought of never hearing that again was all that went through my mind. I just hope that people do not start bringing them on mass to Argonaut football games.

I was meeting with a client this afternoon at the shared office space that he utilizes. Unlike the Toronto Shared Offices that I have, he did not have a receptionist answering his calls, he did not have access to boardrooms or meeting rooms and he did not have complimentary coffee.  We had to go down to a food court of another building two blocks away to get a coffee.  I told him that next time he should meet with me at my Toronto office space.

It is not often that I welcome rain, but in todays case, I am loving it.  I am looking forward to it warming up again,  just not the humidity that we experienced this week. When I am in my Toronto office space the heat and humidity are not a problem, as the office is climate controlled. It is the leaving of my office space Toronto and having to walk out to a wall of heat and humidity that is not fun. I am considering leaving my office early and heading up to the Esplanade to sit on a patio while the break in the weather permits me to enjoy sitting on a patio and not having to go inside the bar to enjoy a beer.

I just looked out my office window overlooking the Toronto Harbour and noticed that the sky is still cloudy, but not as dark as it was earlier. Hopefully this does not mean that the temperature will be sky rocketing again.

Even with this small break in the temperature, the City of Toronto is still planning to keep the cooling centers open. It seems that tomorrow the temperatures will climb again, as will the wave of humidity.

Another hot day in Toronto. As I sit here in my air conditioned  downtown Toronto office space,  I am fully aware that it is still hot outside on day 5 of this heat wave. I am however watching as a large number of people are getting on the ferry boats and going over to the Toronto Islands.

I am considering stepping out of the office and taking the ferry boat across to the islands myself. But then again, I am also considering finding a pub to watch the semi final game of the world cup between Germany and Spain, to decide who will take on the Netherlands in the world cup final. I will be cheering for Germany, not because I took German back in high school, but I think it will be a great match between the Dutch and the Deutsch.

Some other tenants at my Toronto office space are choosing to watch the world cup semi final match on the giant plasma TV in the South East boardroom. While the screen is great for meetings, it works well as a TV too.

Speaking of going to a pub to watch the game, I have noticed these past few days that more people are opting not to sit on the patio of restaurants and bars, but to go inside the air conditioned establishment and relax there instead.  The end to this heat wave does not seem to be until Friday, but then is expected to start getting warm again on Saturday.

Just when you thought it was safe to drive in downtown Toronto again, the Shriners  come to town. Over 10,000 Shriners are in Toronto this week for their annual convention. As part of their convention, they hold a parade with elaborate floats and miniature vehicles. This year with the Shriner convention in Toronto, they will be having their parade on University Avenue.

The parade, scheduled to start around 1 p.m. at Queen’s Park, will cause the shut down of University Avenue in both directions from College Street all the way down to Front Street. The closures are expected to begin early this morning and remain closed until 7 p.m.

The Shriners are mostly known for their funny fez hats, miniature cars and a well known circus. They do a great deal of fund raising for children’s hospitals specializing in burn care and orthopedics.

As I was heading to my Toronto office space, I could already see a bunch vehicles and trailers with Shriner logos and even a truck that was shaped like train locomotive that were heading for Queen’s Park to get into the parade. When I arrived at the parking lot outside my office space Toronto, there were a number of people with fez hats also parking in the lot. I started to wonder if my downtown office space was also going to be invaded by Shriners,  but quickly realized that they were parking there so they could pick up their cars after the parade.

Shriners raises funds for children’s hospitals across North America specializing in orthopedic and burn care, spinal cord rehabilitation and cleft lip and palate treatment. One of those locations is in Montreal.

Toronto’s second largest parade and North America’s largest pride parade happened on Sunday. The 30th annual Pride Toronto parade was full of colourful floats and groups showing off their pride.

The missing float was that of those who were proud to have a downtown Toronto office space, but there is always next year.

Meanwhile a few hours before the parade, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second was on a walk further down Church Street, at a morning service and dedication at St James Cathedral at Church and King Streets.

Back up Church Street, there were plenty of other queens for the pride parade, including one who chose to wear a balmomaral kilt (the official kilt tarten of the royal family) .

With all the security for the Queen, I was still able to park my car at my Toronto office space. I was able to park my car and spend an hour in my office space Toronto, before going to see the Queen at St James and then the other queens further up church street.

I did not make it out to Woodbine Racetrack for the running of the Queen’s Plate, but I was able to find a pub that had the race along with the pomp and circumstance of the Queen’s presents at the race on TV.

The parade on Yonge Street did not include any references to the Queen on her Royal Visit, it did include support groups and floats from the various people who were running for Mayor of Toronto.

Saying Happy 143rd Birthday Canada makes more sense than saying Happy 27th Canada Day. What a lot of people may not know or may not remember is that the first time July 1st was called “Canada Day” was 1983.

Previously July first was known as “Dominion Day”, but an Act of Parliament in October of 1982, changed the name so to make the name sound less colonial and because in 1992 Canada had its own constitution that replaced the British North American Act (BNA). Some (like my father) refused to accept this name change and continued to call it “Dominion Day” because they believed that dominion referred to to the fact that Canada had dominion from sea to sea.  I still remember asking when I was about 10, why Dominion Stores had day named after it .

Regardless of what it had been called or what it is now called, July 1st is a day for Canadians to celebrate Confederation through the BNA of 1867, that made Canada a Kingdom of its own. Being born on the Centennial year of 1967, it was alway easy for me to remember how old Canada was, I just had to add 100 to my age. The year I was born, the government sent out special scrolls for children born in that year.  I wonder if for its Sesquicentennial, the government will send out a special tax rebates to those born in Canada on its Centennial. Ok, wishful thinking.

Back to this Canada Day. In our nation’s capital, Canada Day was off to a more pomp and circumstance beginning, because Her Royal Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip arrived on Parliament Hill in a horse-drawn landau, complete with a mounted RCMP escort.

    The Royal Standard of Canada

    The Queen's Personal Canadian Flag

Instead of the Canadian flag flying above the Peace Tower of Parliament Hill, the Queen’s personal Canadian flag (The Royal Standard) will be flying.

I believe that shortly after the Queen leaves Parliament Hill, her flag will then be taken down and replace with the Canadian flag for the remainder of the Canada Day celebrations.

As I sit here working in my Toronto downtown office space, I notice that I am only one of a few people working on this national holiday. Some of the others who are working in their Toronto office space are much like myself and are working with American clients who do not have a holiday today. This is not the case for an acquaintance of mine, his office space Toronto is closed today, but he still needs to work. Working from home was not an option, as his neighbors were having a large and noisy Canada Day party. She had to rent a hotel room with WIFI internet access, so she could meet a deadline of July 2nd. She did tell me that she is now rethinking her current office situation, but is stuck in a lease that does not come up until the end of this year. I reminded her that I have a great office space location without a long term lease commitment, and that I have 24 hour access seven days a week.  Her only rebuttal was “why did you not tell me about this sooner”.

Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s began her 22nd Royal tour of Canada today in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but she has actually visited Canada 24 times (twice as Princess Elizabeth). The Royal Couple had been met by heavy rain earlier when their Canadian Armed Forces plane touched down at Halifax. The Queen will be in Canada from June 28 to July 6, 2010, before heading off to New York City.

As part of her itinerary, she will celebrating the Canadian navy’s centenary. The Queen will be unveiling two plaques commemorating the Canadian Naval Centennial and the HMCS Sackville.

The Queen also has a personal interest in the Royal Canadian Navy. She is the patron of  The Navy League of Canada, The Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund and The Royal Canadian Naval Association.

This Royal tour will also mark the first time the Queen has been in Ottawa for Canada Day celebrations.

The Queen’s Plate is traditionally held in the last Sunday of June was even moved forward a week, so that the Queen could attend her fourth Queen’s Plate race and her first one since 1997.

Along with official visit to Queen’s Park and other official functions, the Queen will be attending church services at St. James Cathederal.

The royal couple will also be taking a flight from the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to visit Research in Motion in Waterloo. Then upon returning to Toronto, she will also be touring Canada’s largest film studio and more official dinners before departing to New York City to address the United Nations General Assembly and visit the site where the World Trade Center towers collapsed during the September 11, 2001 attacks.

One thing that did not seem to be a part of this royal tour is a visit to  my downtown Toronto office space. I know that Queen will be staying in the Royal Suite of the Royal York Hotel, but where will her aids and handlers be setting up their Toronto office space while they are here?
